Robert Allen Cheatham, 78, of Paris, Illinois, passed away at 4:36 a.m. EDT Monday, April 3, 2017, in the emergency room of Regional Hospital in Terre Haute, Indiana. He retired in 1993 from Paris High School after thirty-two years as a high school math teacher.

He was born September 3, 1938, in Edgar County, Illinois, the son of the late William F. "Bill" and Mary Ellen (Fulton) Cheatham. He married Carole Anne Lindsey on December 28, 1962, at Horace Baptist Church in Horace, Illinois, and she survives.

Other survivors include a daughter, Lisa Anne Cheatham of Paris; three brothers, Frank (Teri) Cheatham of Paris, Steve (Kay) Cheatham of Paris, and Paul (Ruth) Cheatham of Kansas, Illinois; two sisters, Kathryn Johnson of Birmingham, Alabama, and Linda (Tom) Phillips of Chrisman, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Cheatham attended Bob Jones University before earning his Bachelor's Degree in Math Education from the University of Illinois and his Master's Degree in Education from Indiana State University. He began teaching at Proviso East High School in Maywood, Illinois, for several years before accepting a position at Paris High School in 1968. He was an active and devoted member of the Horace Baptist Church where he had served in numerous capacities including Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, and Youth Sponsor. In addition, he served as the sponsor of the Paris High School Bible Club and the Paris High School Chapter of the National Honor Society for many years. He was a member of the National Educators Association, as well as the Illinois and Edgar County Retired Teachers Associations. He was also a former Edgar Township Cemetery Trustee. Bob earned his pilot's license, and enjoyed flying small aircraft in his younger years. He also especially enjoyed traveling, camping, and his John Deere tractors.

For those who wish, the family suggests that memorials be made to Horace Baptist Church or to the Edgar County Retired Teachers Association.


Services celebrating his life were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 8, 2017, at Templeton Funeral Home in Paris. Pastor Rick Cook officiated, and music was provided by John Cox, soloist, and Jeannette Annis, pianist. Burial followed in Franklin Cemetery south of Chrisman. Casket bearers were Frank, Paul, and Steve Cheatham, Max and Mike Lindsey, and Tom Phillips. Honorary casket bearers were Brad Annis and Steve Lutz. Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Templeton Funeral Home in Paris.
